Ophthalmology

At EVMS, our physicians are dedicated to promoting eye health. We diagnose and treat patients with a variety of eye or vision issues:

General Ophthalmology

  • Cataract screening and surgical management
  • Evaluation of refractive problems including contact lens fitting
  • Glaucoma screening and treatment
  • Diabetic eye disease screening and treatment
  • Treatment of eye injuries
  • Evaluation and treatment of eye infections
  • Evaluation and treatment of dry eye and ocular allergies
  • Comprehensive ocular examinations for inherited and acquired eye diseases including macular degeneration

Retina Services

  • Subspecialty evaluation of complex diabetic retinal disease.
  • Laser therapy for diabetic eye disease
  • All aspects of retina surgical intervention
  • Advanced treatment of macular degeneration

Cornea/Uveitis Services

  • Evaluation of complex cornea disease including dystrophies, degenerations and keratoconus
  • Medical and surgical treatment for all aspects of cornea disease
  • Diagnosis and management of uveitic eye diseases

Glaucoma

  • Treatment of all forms of glaucoma
  • Sophisticated newer technology providing nerve fiber layer analysis.
  • Visual field testing
  • All aspects of medical, laser and surgical therapy for glaucoma

Pediatric

  • General eye exams for the pediatric population
  • Treatment of crossed eyes (strabismus) and amblyopia
  • Consultative services for ocular manifestations of pediatric illnesses

Oculoplastic

  • Evaluation and treatment of lid and orbital disorders including thyroid eye disease and ptosis
  • Cosmetic treatment of brow and lid ptosis
  • Surgical treatment of lid and orbital disorders

Refractive Surgery

  • Latest refractive surgical techniques including LASIK, PRK, and Intralase

Who should be referred to Ophthalmology?
1. Diabetic patients require yearly examinations
2. Patients on ethambutol and plaquenil require baseline and ongoing screening examinations
3. Patients with a family history of eye disease (glaucoma, macular degeneration/etc)
4. Older patients with visual complaints to evaluate for cataracts:

  • Difficulty with night vision/driving
  • Difficulty reading

5. All sickle cell patients, especially sickle cell disease
6. Patients with signs of eye infection refractive to treatment or atypical in presentation
7. Patients with JRA, RA, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease or other rheumatologic diseases to screen for uveitis
8. Visual complaints such as flashes, dimming of vision or missing part of the visual field require urgent evaluation to rule out retinal detachment
